Composer Robert Pound’s WHEN CREATION FABLES MEET invites listeners on a musical journey through fable-like compositions, where notes and the spaces between them create vibrant scenes and narratives. when we three meet, a traditional sonata turned inside-out, derives from the opening scene of Macbeth, with the unusual trio — clarinet, bassoon, and piano — representing the three witches. The full trio diverges into duos and solos and then reconvenes, depicting the witches bizarre, shadowy dances. Pound’s storytelling continues in creation fables for flute, cello and piano, a musical cosmology. The seamless chain of songs depicts the evolution of a world, from primordial plasma through its formation, maturity, and destruction. Both pieces on WHEN CREATION FABLES MEET are accompanied by stop-motion animations by Elizabeth and Alden Phelps.
