Born in Lisbon in 1944, Maria João Pires became internationally known when she won the International Beethoven Competition in 1970. Her piano playing has often been described as magical, captivating and deeply poetic. Celebrated especially for her Mozart and Chopin interpretations, at the age of 75 she can look back on a rich discography. Her long-standing relationship with Deutsche Grammophon, with whom she signed an exclusive contract in 1989, has resulted in a series of outstanding recordings focusing on her great musical loves: Alongside Mozart and Chopin, Schubert and Schumann. This extensive limited edition celebrates the career of the great Portuguese pianist on 38 CDs: the box includes reference recordings of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin and Schubert as well as the legendary piano concertos by Mozart and Schumann with Claudio Abbado and rare Fado recordings.
