The publication highlights the activities of the Guinean state record label, Syliphone, during the 1970s within the framework of the "authenticité" policy initiated by President Sékou Touré following independence in 1958. This state strategy aimed at cultural revitalization and decolonization by establishing a network of regional orchestras that blended indigenous folklore with jazz, funk, and Cuban rhythms. Syliphone’s work was revolutionary for post-colonial Africa, marking the first time traditional instruments and griot songs were integrated into a modern orchestral format. Between 1967 and 1983, the label released over 750 unique compositions, which have since become a significant historical legacy and highly prized by collectors.
