The collaboration between Raül Refree and Maria Mazzotta is an exploration of Apulian folklore, specifically the phenomenon of "pizzica taranta." The project’s core concept revolves around musical trance as the only socially acceptable remedy for women suffering from depression in early 20th-century Southern Italy. The musical structure is designed as an evolution from lullabies and religious melodies to wild, pagan rhythms, symbolizing metamorphosis and spiritual liberation. Refree, acclaimed for his experimental fusion of flamenco and folk, joined forces with Mazzotta, a prominent voice in world music, to utilize traditional singing and a female choir to illustrate the therapeutic power of music and its connection to ancient rituals of self-expression.
