After the first few numbers of this operetta, it is easy to believe the reports that Joseph Beer, the composer of this piece, was a musical prodigy: Charleston and tango, oriental melismas and quickstep - everything bubbles out of this spirited mind, which so amazed the jurors at the Vienna Academy of Music that they waived his first four years of study. When the Stadttheater Zürich premiered Beer's Prince of Shiraz on March 31, 1934 and the Theater an der Wien repeated the sensational success, nothing should have stood in the way of a great career. But the new gentlemen in brown were against it, and so the comeback of this delicious love story from high society had to wait almost 90 years. However, it was so convincingly successful that we need not fear for the future of the seductive American Violet - she is on her way to the zenith with her prince Nadir.
