The legendary group Canario y su Grupo introduced the Puerto Rican rhythm "plena" to the US. The group was formed by Manuel "Canario" Jiménez, who was born in Puerto Rico and moved to New York in the 1910s as a teenager, supposedly as a stowaway on a cargo ship. In New York, he became friends with the Puerto Rican composer and musician, Rafael Hernández, and together they would busk for food. Canario, as he was called, became famous for introducing new elements to plena; in place of the traditional cuatro guitar, he used piano, horns and bass.
