Normil Hawaiians - What's Going On (Bonus Track Version) (2019)

In 1983, against the backdrop of political unrest in the UK and the perceived stagnation of mainstream culture, the band Normal Hawaiians began work on their album What’s Going On?. Deeply embedded in the anarcho-punk scene and Brixton's squatting movement, the group sought an escape from the prevailing Thatcherite climate. The recording process at Foel Studios in rural Wales was characterized by an unconventional approach, blending spontaneous improvisation with rehearsal tapes and experimental sound manipulation. Although the resulting work was a sophisticated and cohesive narrative piece, its original release ended in failure due to the financial collapse of Illuminated Records and subsequent industry blacklisting. Decades later, the album is set for a comprehensive worldwide reissue by Upset The Rhythm in June 2026, featuring remastered tracks and archival material.
