The Pandamonium (originally The Pandas) was a British psychedelic pop group from Kent, primarily active during the late 1960s. The band achieved cult status through their early "psychedelic beat" recordings and their association with the CBS label.
History and Lineup
Formation: The band was formed between 1963 and 1964 as a beat group called The Pandas.
Name Change: In 1966, after signing with CBS, their name was changed to the more contemporary The Pandamonium (the musicians notably only discovered the change upon seeing the sleeve of their first record).
Key Members: The core of the group was the songwriting duo of Bob Ponton (vocals, guitar) and Martin Curtis (vocals, rhythm guitar).
Other Members: Over the years, the lineup included Steve Chapman (drums, who later played with Poco and Al Stewart), Mick Glass (bas), and brothers Dennis and Ray Jens.
Career Highlights
Initial Success: In 1966, the band released a cover of Donovan’s "Season Of The Witch." This recording is significant for being released several months before the author's own version.
Career Peak: In 1967, they released the single "No Presents For Me," widely considered their finest work. The track was notable for its experimental techniques, such as "backwards" fuzz guitar.
Connection with David Bowie: In 1966, David Bowie expressed interest in managing the group, though this collaboration never materialized.
Dissolution and Legacy: Due to a lack of commercial success, the band split in 1968. Ponton and Curtis continued as a duo under the name Thoughts & Words, releasing a self-titled album on the Liberty label in 1969.
Discography (1960s)
The band did not release a full-length album during their active years, instead issuing a series of singles on CBS:
Season Of The Witch / Today I'm Happy (1966)
No Presents For Me / Sun Shines From His Eyes (1967)
Chocolate Buster Dan / Fly With Me Forever (1968)
Archival recordings and unreleased material were eventually collected and officially issued in the 2000s on compilations by Radioactive Records (such as No Presents For Me... Singles & Rarities).
