String Cheese is the self-titled debut and only album by the Chicago-based band, released in September 1971 on Wooden Nickel Records. Known for their blend of psychedelic folk and folk-rock, the group drew frequent comparisons to It’s a Beautiful Day due to their prominent use of electric violin and similar vocal harmonies.

Despite its cult status among collectors today, the band dissolved shortly after the release due to poor sales and lack of promotion. However, some members went on to notable careers:
Violinist Gregory Bloch joined It’s a Beautiful Day (replacing David LaFlamme) and later played with the Italian prog-rock legends PFM.
Guitarist Lawrence Wendelken shifted into production, notably working on the debut album for The Runaways.
In 2008, the album finally reached a wider audience when it was reissued on CD by the Fallout label.
