Harvie S, a distinguished jazz double-bassist and professor at the Manhattan School of Music, introduces his new album, Bright Dawn, where the instrument is featured as a melodic centerpiece for the first time. His journey began with a childhood dream of professional football and enrolling at Berklee as a pianist; however, the profound impact of Scott LaFaro’s playing led him to switch instruments and rapidly achieve recognition, eventually replacing his idol George Mraz. His technical approach combines the use of rare 1920s instruments with innovation, such as the invention of his own compact "Upshot" amplifier. The album brings together exceptional improvisers and reflects the author's philosophy that music is a medium for inspiration and storytelling, transcending mere note-playing.
