The Best of Binaural+ is a compilation released by Chesky Records in December 2022, gathering highlights from the label's Binaural+ series — one of the most ambitious audiophile projects in the history of independent recording. Launched in 2011, the series captures music at 24-bit/192kHz resolution using a binaural dummy head called "Lars," whose specially calibrated ear-canal microphones faithfully encode the spatial acoustics of the performance space. The technology emerged from David Chesky's collaboration with Princeton professor Edgar Choueiri, whose BACCH filter made it possible, for the first time, to play binaural recordings back through conventional loudspeakers without coloring the tonal content.
The compilation spans jazz, folk, classical, blues, world music, and West African percussion, offering a cross-section of Chesky's diverse roster — including Macy Gray, Camille Thurman, Amber Rubarth (one of the earliest artists to record in the Binaural+ format), City of the Sun, Casey Abrams, Meiko, and Guinean drumming ensemble Mangue Sylla & the All-Star Drummers of Guinea.
All recordings were made without compression, equalization, or any signal processing; what entered the microphones is what appears on the master. The result is pristine high-frequency detail, deep and articulate bass, and an exceptionally low noise floor that allows the subtlest performance nuances to emerge. Equally suited to headphone listening and speaker playback, the album functions simultaneously as an artistic showcase and a reference disc for evaluating high-fidelity audio equipment.
