Lebensfries by Icelandic composer Hafliði Hallgrímsson is a substantial contemporary work for string trio performed by the Norwegian Ssens Trio. The composition, completed in 2022, expands upon an earlier piece originally titled String Trio Op. 54, transforming it into a broader cycle of twelve interconnected movements.
The title Lebensfries (“Frieze of Life”) is borrowed from Edvard Munch and reflects the work’s philosophical and emotional scope. Hallgrímsson dedicates the piece to the memory of the Norwegian painter Lars Hertervig, whose poetic landscapes and tragic life story served as a source of inspiration. Rather than attempting to depict Hertervig’s paintings directly, the composer draws on their dreamlike stillness and atmosphere, translating those qualities into sound.
Ssens Trio
Sølve Sigerland — Violin
Henninge Landaas — Viola
Ellen Margrete Flesjø — Cello
