Miley Cyrus is here with her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, and it’s as visually appealing as it is sonically diverse. Talk about rock, jazz, pop, and even some country sprinkled into a record that takes you on an emotionally tormenting ride. Yeah, this isn’t the Endless Summer Vacation era where we had empowerment anthems like “Flowers” and “River.” Nearly every song in Something Beautiful discusses Cyrus’ dependence on this lover and why she needs them to navigate life’s turbulent waters.
This message is more clearly drilled in in “Easy Lover,” – a song that in another universe might have ended up with Beyoncé. But appearing on Something Beautiful, in its true Jazz-rock form, Cyrus wails about falling for a partner that is not an “easy lover.” However, her moans aren’t of the kind you see in a person who has come to their senses enough to realize they are in a toxic relationship. It’s more like she’s managed to convince herself that her partner’s love is the only one she needs, even though it’s rough around the edges. “You drive me crazy, oh, but I still miss you when you’re gone / Every second, every hour / (Ooh-woo) It’s in your nature, to light me up / I love to hate ya, uh, but I can’t stand it when you’re gone / So I call you once every hour,” she sings in the verse. In the chorus, she reinforces the strength of her attachment when she sings, “You got the love I always needed / Tie me to horses and I still wouldn’t leave ya / But you’re not an easy lover.”
