The album built upon the richness of its predecessor Decay (2017), infusing it with a fresh energy born from years of travel, lived experience, and deep engagement with the Pacific coast landscapes of British Columbia. Thematically, Coastal draws upon imagery of Canada's northwest shoreline: the white ravens of Qualicum Beach, chinook salmon, coastal spirits, and mystical terrain. A notable track references Edward Arthur Wilson, an eccentric historical figure from British Columbia. The album is bookended by the instrumental theme "Coastal" and its reprise, forming a cohesive arc.
Campbell, a former member of black metal band Harrow, employs a wide array of traditional and handmade instruments to craft folk music that weaves together influences from the classic neofolk wave (Death In June, Current 93, Sol Invictus), 1960s–70s acid folk, post-punk, and archaic folklore traditions. On Coastal, this synthesis took on a distinctly regional character, rooted in the atmosphere and mythology of the Pacific Northwest.
