Released in 1962 on the Vox label, this recording by Montreal's Petit Ensemble Vocal under director George Little presents Claudio Monteverdi's profound Lagrime d'amante al sepolcro dell'amata (SV 111) alongside a selection of his Scherzi musicali and other vocal works. The six-part "Sestina"—the centerpiece of Monteverdi's Sixth Madrigal Book—was composed in 1610 as a lament for his gifted teenage pupil, singer Caterina Martinelli, who died of smallpox just before she was to premiere the title role of his opera L'Arianna. Soprano Claire Masella, alto Marcelle Dumontet, tenor René Lacourse, and bass Claude Létourneau deliver these five-voice madrigals with the intimate support of continuo, while solo offerings include Masella's haunting "Lamento d'Arianna" and Dumontet's poignant rendition of the famous lament. Mastered by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder, this rare Canadian recording preserves an important chapter in Monteverdi performance history, capturing the seismic shift from Renaissance polyphony to the dramatic expressivity of the early Baroque.
