The Best of Chhoun Malay, Vol. 1 is a 2026 compilation released by The Cambodia Vintage Music Archive, Inc., bringing together restored recordings by one of the earliest and most important female voices of Cambodia's musical "Golden Era." Chhoun Malay (ឈួន ម៉ាឡៃ), born in Cambodia in 1941, launched her career in the late 1950s and established herself on the Phnom Penh music scene before Pen Ran and Ros Serey Sothea rose to prominence. Her repertoire spanned traditional Cambodian ballads and romances to Khmer adaptations of Western hits — from Frank Sinatra and The Beatles to Neil Diamond and Hank Williams. She collaborated with Sinn Sisamouth, the towering figure of Cambodian music, and was known for her expressive, slightly nasal vocal style set against arrangements blending tremolo-laden electric guitar, brass, and rhythm section.Title: The Best of Chhoun Malay, Vol. 1

The tracks presented here cover a broad emotional and stylistic range: from poignant ballads of love and separation ("ទឹកហូរឆ្ងាយ" — "The Flowing Water Far Away," "រឿងស្នេហខ្ញុំ" — "My Love Story") to more upbeat, Western-influenced numbers ("ឌីសុី" — "Dizzy," a Khmer rendition of the Western hit). Most original master recordings from Cambodian artists of this era were destroyed or lost during the Khmer Rouge regime (1975–1979), when approximately two million people perished and musicians were specifically targeted. Chhoun Malay was one of the few surviving artists — she managed to conceal her entertainment background and eventually emigrated to the United States, where she passed away on March 4, 2012 in Ohio. This collection is part of the systematic work by CVMA — a nonprofit organization founded in 2010 by Rotanak Oudom Oum, Maya Jade, and Nate Hun — to digitize, restore, and reissue surviving recordings from original vinyl pressings, which have effectively become the "new masters" following the loss of studio tapes. Her song "The Story of My Love" was previously featured on the soundtrack to the documentary Don't Think I've Forgotten: Cambodia's Lost Rock and Roll (2014, dir. John Pirozzi), released by Dust-to-Digital.
