ELMO NERO was founded in 2022 by Gina Schwarz and Christoph Helm. The following year, the exceptional bassist, composer & Hans Koller Prize winner and the guitarist, who expertly combines various genres of popular music in his playing, released a debut album that was enthusiastically received by critics and audiences alike. Since June 2025, Chris Parker has been on drums: Having moved to Vienna from the US in 2023, he quickly became one of the busiest musicians on the scene, perfectly complementing the band's dynamic and eclectic sound with his multi-layered and tasteful playing. The recently recorded second studio album documents the trio's continuous development and delivers another strong statement full of musical surprises!
ELMO NERO is beautifully exploring what's possible in a guitar trio setting, finding many ways to express honesty, joy and beauty in this classic format. (Gilad Hekselman)
While the trio's music is challenging, it also very much appeals to the listener's emotions. Highly recommended. (Michael Ternai, music austria)
ELMO NERO suggests a format of a classic jazz guitar trio, but this trio uses the rich legacy of this format as a playground for its own democratic dynamics and playful and highly melodic textures. The trio’s slow-burning dynamics stress a tight rhythmic sensibility and leave enough space for individual improvisations and are open for joyful surprises (Eyal Hareuveni, salt peanuts*)
