The soundtrack to A Gorilla Story: Told by David Attenborough is an original score composed by British composers Patrick Jonsson and Richard Collins for the Netflix documentary of the same name. Directed by James Reed (Academy Award winner for My Octopus Teacher) and produced by Alastair Fothergill and Silverback Films, the film is an intimate account by Sir David Attenborough of his first encounter with a baby gorilla named Pablo in the mountains of Rwanda in the late 1970s — footage captured for the landmark BBC series Life on Earth — and the fate of Pablo's descendants in the present day. The film weaves together half-century-old archival material with contemporary footage and includes excerpts from Attenborough's 1978 field journals.
Jonsson is a Swedish, London-based composer and Emmy nominee, best known for scoring the Academy Award–winning short documentary The White Helmets and the Oscar- and BAFTA-nominated feature documentary Virunga. His feature credits include The Boogeyman (20th Century Studios) and Scrapper (Sundance Prize winner). Collins is his longstanding collaborator, with whom he co-scored Netflix's Heart of Invictus; Collins's independent credits include Secret Amazon: Into the Wild. Both composers are represented by Air-Edel. The score was recorded and mixed at Air-Edel Studios by engineer Nick Taylor.
The album's music draws on Jonsson's signature blend of orchestral and electronic textures, crafting a sonic landscape that underscores the film's contemplative and deeply personal tone. Across 22 tracks totalling approximately 46 minutes, the score follows the arc of the narrative — from first encounters and diary entries through intra-group conflict and, ultimately, a message of hope.
