Suddenly There Was You is the fifth studio album by American singer, pianist, and songwriter Zulema Cusseaux, released in June 1976 on RCA Victor (catalogue number APL1-1423). It was the final record she delivered under her contract with the label, closing a three-year period that had begun with her self-titled 1975 RCA debut.
By the mid-seventies, Zulema occupied a rare and commercially awkward position: a Black woman who sat at the keyboards and performed predominantly self-penned material. RCA genuinely believed in her potential and committed real promotional resources — which made the commercial shortfall all the more frustrating. The title single was reviewed in the October 1976 issue of Cash Box, whose writer tipped it for the Top 40 and praised its direct emotional charge.
Musically, the record presents a mature blend of soul, proto-disco, and funk: Carl Maultsby's dense arrangements frame a vocal performance shaped by an Aretha Franklin influence yet unmistakably Zulema's own — conveying an emotional sincerity that listeners and collectors have noted as increasingly rare. Among the session participants was trumpeter Jon Faddis, appearing courtesy of Pablo Records. Following the album's release, Zulema and RCA parted ways; she resurfaced in 1978 with Z-licious on Lejoint Records.
