Veteran trumpeter Joe Wilder is very much in his prime on this late-period CD, playing in a variety of settings with Seldon Powell (who doubles on tenor and flute), pianist Bobby Tucker, guitarist James Chirillo, bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Sherman Ferguson. Performing three of his originals, Tucker's "Thinking of Lady," and Benny Carter's "The Courtship," and nine standards, the lyrical trumpeter is heard on several sextet numbers, a couple of trios with piano and guitar, and duets with both Tucker and Chirillo. Wilder's pretty sound, lyrical style and melodic approach are featured throughout in relaxed and frequently exquisite form.
