The German Philip Zoubek Trio, founded in 2015, releases its fifth album, E n i g m a, at the end of October 2026 — the most consistently developed studio work in the ensemble’s history. From the start, the group has persistently extended the classic piano-trio line-up (piano, double bass, drums) with synthesizers, effects units, xylophone and recorder; the new album continues this path and condenses it.

The central theme of pianist Philip Zoubek’s compositional thinking is the productive tension between acoustic and electronic sound: the two do not merely coexist but interlock, contrast, colour and destabilise one another. The piano is detuned and roughened by electronics, while an electronic impulse reshapes acoustic structures from within. Zoubek often plays piano with his left hand while operating a synthesizer with his right, and the resulting hybrid sound ranges from brutal glissandi and percussive attacks to delicate, chamber-like marimba textures, bell-like resonances and distorted riffs.

Double bassist David Helm uses distortion, ring modulator and octaver, probing the sonic space both toward raw power and toward filigree subtlety. Drummer Dominik Mahnig thinks beyond the kit’s rhythmic function: with a fine sense of timbre and melody, for instance on the table xylophone, he adds a chamber-music dimension.

The title piece came about almost incidentally: improvising with piano and synthesizer, Zoubek stumbled on programmes in which acoustic and electronic sound merged in a particularly compelling way. From these sessions crystallised recurring sonic types — glissandi of varied colouring, mutually detuned, almost naive melodies, percussive textures, loops and distorted riffs. They run through the whole multi-part piece, made up of self-contained yet inseparably linked chapters: one section grows organically out of another, or the parts interweave in more complex ways — as contrast, rupture or slow transition. It is this constant return to familiar sonic zones that creates the enigmatic quality reflected in the title.
