This album features guitarist Ayman Fanous in duo and trio with saxophonist Ned Rothenberg and percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani, as well as in a series of string trios with violinist Mark Feldman and cellist Thomas Ulrich. This release is part of a 5-disc box set of recordings featuring Fanous with a wide array of New York’s premiere improvisers. Fanous’s distinctive voice on classical guitar, electric guitar, and bouzouki synthesizes classical, flamenco, and free jazz techniques, producing a “stylistic amalgam of Derek Bailey and Paco de Lucia” (Jay Collins, Signal to Noise). Fanous draws on his Egyptian ancestry, to create an approach to free improvisation that is informed by musical traditions of the Arab world, Turkey, India, North Africa, Persia, and the Balkans.
