"Ludgate Hill" is a collection of all Tom Thumb recordings.
Tom Thumb was one of the most vibrant and influential New Zealand rock bands of the late 1960s. They evolved from classic pop rock to complex progressive rock, leaving their mark as masters of arrangement.
In their early years, the band was known for their high-quality cover versions and "British" sound. Their early singles, such as "Witchi Tai To" (1969), brought them national popularity.
Over time, the music became heavier and more complex. The band began incorporating elements of psychedelia and art rock. It was during this period (1970) that they recorded their ambitious EP "Ludgate Hill," inspired by classical forms and the powerful sound of the Hammond organ.
Although the band never released a full-length studio album during their lifetime (only singles and EPs), they were considered one of the best live performers in Australasia.
The band disbanded in 1970 shortly after the release of Ludgate Hill, when the musicians decided to pursue other projects (in particular, Richard Le Fort became a successful producer).
