Apex (Soundtrack from the Netflix Film) is the original score for the 2026 Netflix survival thriller directed by Baltasar Kormákur (Everest, Touch). The film stars Charlize Theron as a grieving woman thrust into a deadly game of predator and prey in the Australian wilderness, with Taron Egerton as the calculating killer who pursues her. The music was composed by Icelandic composer and multi-instrumentalist Högni Egilsson (b. 1985), Kormákur's longtime collaborator, previously heard on the Netflix series Katla (2021) and the Focus Features film Touch (2024).
To craft the score, Högni spent two months on location in Australia's Blue Mountains, making the deliberate choice to exclude all electronics in order to preserve an authentically "non-urban" sonic world. In their place, he turned to woodwinds — oboes and bassoons — to produce "jittering," bird- and insect-like textures that embody the film's predatory natural environment. Australian birdlife served as a direct compositional source, shaping the score's timbre and rhythmic character from the ground up. As Högni himself described it, the music was built to hold both the physical vastness of the landscape and the intimate psychological tension of the narrative.
The resulting album moves between two emotional registers: stately, melodically expressive themes for the human characters and fragmented, unstable writing for the wilderness itself. Featured soloists include Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto (on the title track and "Compass") and Icelandic pianist Pétur Björnsson ("Tommy"), while the album closes with the sweeping "Apex Suite," performed by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. The soundtrack was released digitally on April 24, 2026, simultaneous with the film's global Netflix premiere.
