After their debut Lowlands (Off Record, 2024), the duo Varv continues their journey with Transit (Off Record, April 2026), a work that deepens their exploration across different musical genres, which lies at the heart of the project.

The album’s six tracks outline possible forms of dialogue between the two musicians, in a constant exchange where sound—through its modulation and continuous evolution—remains both the focus and the premise of their compositional research. Electronic sequences, written material, and improvisation intertwine in structures that are sometimes open, sometimes more rigid, yet always capable of transforming along the way.

Transit evokes precisely a condition of passage: a suspended space where nothing is rigidly defined, and every element remains in flux, malleable, and in a state of continuous possibility.

Varv is a crossover project (contemporary jazz, electronic) formed by Andrea Cappi on keyboards and Francesco Mascolo on drums. Their music blends written material, improvisation, and sound manipulation. The name of the project evokes both the evocative and structural nature of their research: a path that unfolds through layers, overlapping different influences and languages until it forms a narrative that opens onto distant landscapes. In geology, a varve is an annual layer of sedimentary rock that records the passage of time and its transformations, like wrinkles on a face. In the same way, the duo’s music seeks to build itself through accumulation and mutation.
