After nearly a decade living between the West Coast and Nashville, Madrid-born songstress Juana Everett releases Past Lives in California, her deeply personal ode to the Golden State. The album traces a musical journey through the lives she dreamed of and lived in California, the myths that slowly crumbled, and the people who changed her forever.
In 2016, dissatisfied with the life she had built, Everett left her job and apartment in Madrid and crossed the ocean in full Sagittarius mode to produce her first solo album in Los Angeles. What began as a leap of faith became a nineyear journey across Southern California. Constant changes of homes and jobs, long drives, extensive travels, an independently released debut album, and more than a few existential crises shaped the artist she is today. Everett claims she ultimately found herself in the concrete jungle of L.A.
In 2024, Everett packed her belongings once again and drove across the country with a suitcase full of new songs and a clear plan: to record them in Music City. There, she unexpectedly crossed paths with Alex Muñoz, guitarist and producer with an extensive track record alongside some of Americana’s biggest names. Everett and Muñoz grew up in the same neighbourhood in Madrid and both crossed the Atlantic following their musical calling. Their paths finally converged 5,000 miles away from their childhood streets, in Tennessee. A collaboration seemingly written in the stars, they soon entered Middletree Studios in East Nashville and the iconic FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama (Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, The Rolling Stones, Jason Isbell) to record the songs that make up Past Lives in California.
Past Lives in California unfolds as a journey in which each song takes on its own shape, telling a different life story under the West Coast sun. The album moves along a winding road of feel-good melodies, gritty and sassy Americana, Dark Country tones, and nostalgic mid-tempos, blending the sound of Nashville with the freedom of the West and, at times, subtle echoes of Everett’s Spanish roots.
These songs invite the listener to roam the Pacific Coast Highway with the taste of ocean salt on their lips, to face the desert wind head-on, drink in forgotten bars, talk to strangers, and dive into the poetry—and darkness— of other people’s stories.
Produced by Alex Muñoz (Margo Price, Nikki Lane, John Hiatt), mixed by Joe Pisapia (Kacey Musgraves, Allison Russell, Jonathan Wilson), and mastered by Dave McNair (Patti Smith, Bod Dylan, R.E.M.), the first singles from Past Lives in California have already received praise from international outlets such as BBC Radio, Americana UK, Noticias Cuatro (Spanish National TV), and RNE (Spanish National Radio), among others.
The album features special guest vocal appearances by Dylan LeBlanc and Nicki Bluhm, and includes drummer Jamie Dick (Rhiannon Giddens, Dawn Landes, Gill Landry) and keyboardist Ray Jacildo (The Black Keys, Cactus Blossom, Yola).
