"On the Scene with Ricardo Ray" is the debut studio album by American pianist and composer Ricardo Ray (also known as Richie Ray) and his orchestra, released in 1965 on Fonseca Records. This record became a milestone in the emergence of New York boogaloo and early salsa, fusing elements of traditional Latin music, jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock.
A blend of guajira, mambo, cha-cha-cha, and Latin jazz, the album is filled with the raw, groundbreaking energy that would later shape the signature sound of the duo Richie Ray and Bobby Cruz.
The lead vocals were performed by the legendary Bobby Cruz and renowned Puerto Rican singer Chivirico Dávila. In the same year, 1965, due to the high popularity of the material, the Fonseca Records label released a sequel to the album, “On The Scene With Ricardo Ray - Vol. 2”, which included such iconic tracks as “Mírame” and “La Cuchara”.
