In 1943, Orff, following the resounding success of his "Carmina Burana," created "Carmina Catulli," another choral work for percussion and piano.
The text of this parable about the power of Eros is taken from the poems of Catullus. The 1967 American recording on the Columbia label, with Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra
and the Temple University Choir, and featuring soprano Judith Blegen and tenor Richard Kness, "possesses great vivacity" (Gramophone). Its first appearance
on CD will undoubtedly be welcomed by Orff's many admirers.
"Catulli Carmina" is part of "Trianfo," a musical triptych that also includes "Carmina Burana" and "Trianfo di Afrodite." The work is scored for a full mixed choir, including soprano and tenor soloists and a full percussion orchestra—possibly inspired by Stravinsky's "Wedding."
The recording won a Grammy Award (1968) for Best Choral Performance. The award was shared by conductor Eugene Ormandy
and choirmaster Robert Page.
