Soviet American Republic (S.A.R.) was a cult five-piece from São Paulo, emerging in the latter half of the 1980s to build a devoted following within Brazil's small but fervent psychobilly community. The band was a pioneer in writing entirely in English — a rarity among Brazilian acts of the era — and vocalist Niki Nixon's idiosyncratic delivery placed the group in unmistakable alignment with the genre's international benchmarks: Guana Batz, The Meteors, The Cramps, and Demented Are Go.
Join the Mess or Leave the Town is the band's sole studio album, recorded in 1988 with impressive production values for the time: a double-fold sleeve, printed lyric insert, and extensive photo booklet. Its twelve tracks deploy the full psychobilly toolkit — from the menacing rockabilly swagger of "The Living Dead Strikes Again" to the sardonic comedy of "Never Trust a Guy Named Bruce," the punk fury of "Syphilis," the slap-bass murk of "Swampy Thing," and the declaration-of-identity finale "The Soviet American Attack!" Originally released on Devil Discos (cat. FDS014) in 1988, the album has remained a touchstone of Brazilian psychobilly. The 2026 reissue on Neves Records — a São Paulo–state specialist shop and distributor based in Americana/SP — brings this long-sought classic back into physical circulation.
