"Lo scemo e il villaggio" (The Fool and the Village) is the second studio album by the Italian progressive rock band Delirium, released in 1972 on the Fonit Cetra label.
This conceptual work is considered a shining example of the Rock Progressivo Italiano (RPI) movement, which blends classic progressive rock with jazz, folk, and profound lyricism.
Before the album's recording, the band's charismatic frontman and flutist Ivano Fossati left the band to pursue a solo career. He was replaced by Martin Griswald. This reduced the influence of Jethro Tull and flute parts in the music, while significantly strengthening the jazz component with the saxophone.
The album is an avant-garde fusion of jazz rock, symphonic progressive, and acoustic folk. The sound is filled with complex structures and features saxophone, mellotron, piano, and acoustic guitars. The album's lyrics (written by Mauro La Luce) are a philosophical story about the perception of a madman ("fool") and his relationships with the villagers. They explore themes of human cruelty, the lack of tenderness, loneliness, and the vices of society.
