The recording documents a performance at the Great American Music Hall — a historic San Francisco concert venue dating to 1907, known for its ornate balconies, columns, and frescoes, with a capacity of 700. Its intimate scale and acoustic warmth lend the album a focused, devotional quality well suited to the qawwali form.
The two extended pieces anchor the canonical qawwali repertoire. Man Kunto Maula — widely considered the first qawwali ever composed, attributed to the 14th-century Sufi poet Amir Khusrau — is a praise poem to Hazrat Ali, the most ubiquitous piece at qawwali gatherings across the Indian subcontinent. Akhian Udeek Diyan follows as a Punjabi meditation on spiritual longing and anticipation of the Beloved.
Tahir Qawwal's soaring vocal delivery, supported by harmonium, Pakistani tabla, and the rhythmic clapping of the ensemble, builds the ecstatic, participatory energy that defines the live qawwali experience.
