The formidable tough tenor partnership of Judith and Dave O’Higgins return with their third album, Liquorice Allsorts—a vibrant celebration of swing, interplay, and shared musical chemistry.

His ‘n’ Hers continue in the good-humoured tradition of the classic tough tenor pairings. Like the great partnerships that inspired them, their music thrives on contrast and connection. Though differing in temperament—both musically and emotionally—the saxophonists’ distinct voices complement and elevate one another. As Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis once put it: “What we are doing is presenting, side by side, two different styles of playing tenor—a contrast, not a contest.” That spirit lies at the heart of this album.

The title track, Liquorice Allsorts, is an original composition by Judith and Dave, setting the tone for a programme that mixes three new originals with carefully chosen pieces by some of their favourite composers, including Horace Silver, Wayne Shorter, George Coleman, and Lee Morgan. The result is a dynamic and engaging set that balances reverence for the jazz tradition with fresh, contemporary energy.

The album takes its name from a striking artwork by the remarkable porcine artist Pigcasso. More than just a title, the project is dedicated to her extraordinary story. Rescued from a slaughterhouse as a young piglet, Pigcasso went on to create a body of vivid, expressive paintings and became the first non-human artist to hold a solo exhibition. Judith and Dave are proud owners of Liquorice Allsorts, an original piece that inspired the album’s name and spirit—a testament to creativity flourishing in the most unexpected places.

Once again, His ‘n’ Hers are joined by the burning rhythm section that is Graham Harvey on piano, Jeremy Brown on double bass, and Josh Morrison on drums.

Liquorice Allsorts is a joyful, characterful release that captures the essence of collaboration, mutual respect and the enduring power of jazz.
