The acclaimed Australian jazz quartet The Vampires celebrates its 20th anniversary with the release of their eighth studio album, Skydancer. This new work expands upon the concepts of spaciousness and texture introduced in their previous ARIA Award-winning album, Nightjar. Recorded at Sydney's Golden Retriever studios, the album is anchored in the core acoustic interplay of the four members (saxophone, trumpet, bass, and drums), yet significantly broadens its sonic scope through multi-layered studio overdubs, the incorporation of synthesizers and percussion, and a subtle shift toward a more prominent backbeat. Conceptually and visually—complemented by artwork from artist Mia Taninaka—the album explores themes of time, mythology, and layered landscapes. Over two decades of active touring and recording, the ensemble has forged a unique, recognizable style that seamlessly blends immersive ambient jazz with hypnotic grooves.
