As a young child, I had two music teachers. The first was my grandma’s canary. We two used to chase each other all around granny’s old house and I came to imitate that dear flying playmate’s trills so well that we sang indistinguishably from each other and got folks confused over our whereabouts in the house. Then, there was my other music teacher, my granny herself, the well-known and well-loved “old Huron healer” who knew how to get folks’ sad and worried hearts singing again when she went to her piano and, with her twisted, arthritic fingers (“mes doigts-marteaux”, she used to say not without certain pride (“my hammer-shaped fingers”) and played for them a few older, happy or romantic songs, which young me grew up to know well and to which still today, after all those years, I remain much endeared. I vividly remember being charmed and completely captivated by the simple beauty, indeed, the power of my grandmother’s music which I very compassionately believed sent these people home with smiles on their faces and new hope and joy in their hearts, many expressing, as they took their leave, much thankfulness and affection for my grandmother’s excellent natural remedies, her wise counsels and very especially, perceived I, the beautiful, heartsome music she had played for them. That is how I learned about the curative powers of music and this is where I learned that all life is just one great Circle of universal, mutually dependent relations uniting all beings, human and other-than-human.

That is the circular way of thinking, which all peoples once possessed and which some still possess and believe in or that some others have lost and need to rediscover. Like most folks everywhere in the world, people live and practise this way of thinking and living and believe, very similarly to one another, that the “good” way to live begins with recognizing that the Circle is all about “we”, as totally different from living and thinking that all in life has to be centered on the “I”...
