The Sounds - 20 Suosikkia / Emma (1998)

20 Suosikkia / Emma is a 1998 compilation album by the legendary Finnish instrumental rock band The Sounds, released as part of the renowned "20 Suosikkia" (20 Favorite Songs) archival series by Fazer Records (catalog number 3984-22097-2), a label owned by Warner Music Finland.

The Sounds are pioneers and absolute icons of the rautalanka style. Their single "Emma," recorded in January 1963, became a historic phenomenon: it became the first gold disc for an instrumental rock recording in Finland and effectively launched a nationwide craze for electric guitars.

The 1998 compilation is an impeccably restored anthology spanning the band's golden age (1963–1965). The disc includes not only their signature piece—an instrumental arrangement of the ancient Finnish waltz "Emma"—but also other key historical recordings of the band: their interpretations of classic folk melodies, covers of foreign pop hits, and original numbers by guitarist Henrik Granö. Remastering from the late '90s preserved the original tube warmth of the analog tapes, making the guitars rich and intelligible.
