Everything We’ll Never Need is Phil Hooley’s third solo album and is once again produced by Justin Johnson in Nashville. This new collection of self-penned songs flirts with a host of Phil’s musical influences, from the old-west to the blues, folk and soul.

“our intention was to showcase the variety of songwriting on the album, and in many ways the stories in the songs dictated how we approached each one. Walking Man was crying out for that Calexico-style trumpet and the country twang and shuffle of Cowboy Dreaming captured the old time western theme of the song.

“The Album’s centre-piece is the blues influenced Hope Street, and it is my reaction in part to the way many people present themselves and their lifestyle on social media. There seems to be a need to represent their lives as perfect, as something to be envied. I look on the explosion of social media, and “influencers” as something of a Pandora’s Box which we may find hard to stem. This illusion of reality is in stark contrast to what is really happening in the world. However, I don’t exonerate myself from this, “I see barefoot children making shoes for you and me”. The track features some impressive guitar from Nashville session player James Mitchell.”

Phil’s vocal and guitar is handsomely supported by a host of top Nashville session players and Phil’s own love of songwriters such as Guy Clark, Nick Lowe and Bob Dylan is also evident in the delivery of his songs. That said we’re not sure if Dylan has yet offered up his own ode to a famous dessert invented in Phil’s native North of England
