Despite the "theatrical" name, the band was based in Melbourne. They represent one of the most vibrant, distinctive, and, unfortunately, hidden gems of English-language progressive rock in the Southern Hemisphere.
The band's music is unique, but structurally it resembles a mixture of classic King Crimson (from the "Lizard" and "Islands" periods, thanks to the abundance of brass), the sophistication of Genesis, the monumentality of Van der Graaf Generator, and the jazz-rock scope of Chicago or Blood, Sweat & Tears.

The Rainbow Theatre's mastermind, chief composer, arranger, and keyboardist was Julian Morrison. With a deep academic musical education, he created not just rock songs but multilayered scores. Instead of simulating an orchestra with synthesizers (which was common practice in 1975), Morrison assembled a real eight-part brass section (trumpets, trombones, French horn, tenor and alto saxophones) within the rock band.
