In the early 1960s, New York City's Latin American scene was swept by the Cuban dance style charanga. Johnny Pacheco, leaving Charlie Palmieri's orchestra, formed his own band and recorded this album, which instantly became a smash hit. The record sold over 100,000 copies, becoming the best-selling album of its genre at the time.

The album is filled with incredible energy, lightness, and danceable drive. Key tracks include the iconic "El Güiro de Macorina," which made Pacheco a major star, as well as the fiery numbers "Óyeme Mulata" and "Acuyuyé."

Stylistically, the album is an absolute benchmark for charanga—a Cuban musical format transplanted to the pre-salsa New York scene. Most of the tracks can also be classified as pachanga—a faster, more syncopated dance that was incredibly popular at the time, literally getting the crowd moving furiously on the dance floor. The album's music combines strict academic roots (thanks to the violins) with the fiery Afro-Cuban street energy.
