Louie Ramirez made history in Latin American music as a multi-instrumentalist, virtuoso vibraphonist, brilliant arranger, and composer, often called the "Quincy Jones of Latin music." Before recording Vibes Galore, he had already worked with Johnny Pacheco and Charlie Palmieri, but it was here that his solo style truly came into its own.

The album's title, "Vibes Galore" (Vibraphone in Abundance / Sea of Vibes), perfectly captures its concept. Ramirez removes the heavy brass section typical of Latin orchestras, bringing the hypnotic, sparkling, and ethereal sound of his vibraphone to the forefront. For his backing band, he assembled an explosive ensemble, ironically named Conjunto Chango (in honor of Chango, the powerful deity of thunder and drums in the Santeria religion).

The album is an incredibly pumping cocktail. Ramirez masterfully blends traditional Cuban rhythms (such as guaguancó and pachanga) with American jazz, soul, and the rhythm and blues that boomed from the windows of New York's ghettos. The vocals on the album are shared by the superb sonero Rudy Calzado and Ramirez himself.

The record is a breathtaking listen: from the frantic rhythm of "El Titere" and the sultry "Guajira Сhangui" to the refined instrumental jazz themes. The original release on mono and stereo vinyl from Alegre Records is today considered an absolute classic and is highly prized by collectors of old New York salsa.
