Quadro Nuevo was founded in 1996. On a gray January day that year, four young men met for the first time in a parking lot near Salzburg. The four barely knew each other and were supposed to record a film score for ORF television. Their fee was subsequently squandered at the local casino, and the film was never broadcast. But on that day, one thing was clear:
A new quartet with a distinctive sound was born. From then on, there would be only one thing – Quadro Nuevo, their love for nostalgic acoustic music, and their shared journeys from night to night, from stage to stage. A dream came true; the exuberance of happiness can be heard in every note. These spirited, passionate musicians have since toured the world and performed around 4,500 concerts.
Their artistry draws from the magic of extensive travels – from the streets of Bari to the Balkan highlands, the vibrant colors of Bangalore, and the nights of Buenos Aires. The venues for their performances are as diverse as the roots of their music. Whether at renowned festivals or in halls like Carnegie Hall, Quadro Nuevo approaches its audience with the same devotion, becoming one of Europe's most successful world music ensembles.
Tango and French musette waltzes, Aegean mythical melodies, daring road songs along a sun-drenched coastal route, oriental grooves, Brazilian flavor, and Neapolitan street tunes flow playfully together in Quadro Nuevo's music.
Quadro Nuevo The ensemble has received the ECHO Award twice for "Best Live Act of the Year," the German Record Critics' Award, several German Jazz Awards, and a Gold Record.
"Luna Rossa" was the band's debut album. It was recorded during the early stages of their collaboration and released on CD in February 1998. Within a few weeks, it was awarded the German Jazz Award and the European IMPALA Phonograph Prize. In the following years, it became one of the best-selling albums in the European jazz and world music scene.
To celebrate its 30th anniversary, Quadro Nuevo unearthed its old studio tapes. Viennese sound engineer Christoph Stickel remastered them for vinyl, and they are now being released as a double LP along with seven other tracks from the ensemble's early days. All the songs featured the band's legendary guitarist Robert Wolf, who was involved in a tragic traffic accident during a tour through southern Germany in November 2008, from which he died far too soon.
