Based on the novel by author Kathryn Stockett, The Help follows a crew of Jackson, Mississippi-based, African-American maids in the 1960s, and the soundtrack, a 12-track collection of oldies (Franki Valli & the Four Seasons' “Sherry Baby”), classic country (Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash's “Jackson”), and R&B (Ray Charles' “Hallelujah I Love Her So”) dutifully mirrors the heydays of the civil rights movement.Mary J. Blige provides the lone original cut with the achingly lovely, self-penned ballad “Living Proof,” which was written after an emotional pre-screening of scenes from the film.~Review by James Christopher Monger
