"Sketchbook" started out as an idea between Mark and I to record a guitar / drums duo record, with layered guitars and overdubbed stacked textures along with drums. He and I met and worked together back in our NYC days, and we’ve played a bunch of gigs and concerts since coming to California. Mark had recorded a guitar / drums album like this before and I thought it was a super cool concept. I write my music sort of this way, recording and layering directly to Protools, and I often send out these types of layered guitar tracks to players before gigs and projects as reference. The sound reminded Mark of his previous project so we started trading a bunch of ideas. As I developed the idea more the process started to really change the way I document my writing. This became the idea behind the "Sketchbook", with pages and pages of chord change and melodic ideas. The project evolved for me to include bass as well, and I asked Julian Esparza to join us.
The core of these tunes were recorded live as a trio, then later in the spirit of the original idea I layered several more guitar parts on top. In the end I decided to include three of these guitar-only tracks too as a snapshot of how the music came to be.
