Following his 2022 album co-produced by Marty Willson-Piper, the former Moon Festival singer-songwriter has released his ninth and tenth LPs, collaborative efforts recorded with Billy Harvey. The first album, Nourallah, features relaxed, breezy melodies delivered with a gravelly vocal style, blending cynicism and humor through stylistic nods to The Kinks, The House of Love, Wilco, Luna, and Beck. Conversely, Close as a Star takes a predominantly melancholic and despondent turn. Apart from a few upbeat tracks evoking the keyboard style of Queen, the record highlights a world-weary, Mark Eitzel-esque vocal delivery, focusing thematically on isolation, childhood memories, and marital decline.
