Felice Clemente, a highly accomplished Italian saxophonist, leads a new chordless quartet.
With a lineup that excludes harmonic instruments, they paint a picture of contrasting motifs, "clouds and lightning," creating an ensemble that is both airy and thrilling.
Felice Clemente, a saxophonist who has built a solid career in the Italian jazz scene, has formed a new quartet. Clemente has released 18 albums as a leader or co-leader, and is a veteran who has established international recognition, receiving a 4-star rating from DownBeat magazine and having his 2020 solo album "Solo" selected as one of the top 10 at the German Record Critics Awards. He also boasts more than 40 appearances at Milan's Blue Note.
Clemente, who has previously gained popularity with his one-horn quartet consisting of saxophone, piano, bass, and drums, has adopted a "cordless quartet" formation for his "New Quartet," which does not include harmonic instruments such as guitar or piano. Returning to the tradition of piano-less formations left behind by masters such as Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson, he has welcomed virtuosos Alberto Mandarini on trumpet/flugelhorn, Giulio Corini on bass, and Massimo Manzi on drums, and the album is mainly composed of original songs based on a modern sensibility. The album title, "Le nuvole e il fulmine (The Clouds and the Lightning)," is a motif that represents the musical polarity of this work, with "clouds" suggesting a sense of floating, tranquility, and the expansiveness of graceful melodies, and "lightning" suggesting a sudden explosion of energy and sharp tension. By eliminating the use of harmonic instruments, the spatial space created allows the nuances of each instrument's tone to stand out clearly, and a dynamic interplay unfolds as the four members respond sharply to each other, weaving through the gaps in the sound.
Felice Clemente, tenor and soprano sax
Alberto Mandarini, trumpet, flugelhorn
Giulio Corini, double bass
Massimo Manzi, drums
