Bobby Troup - Do Re Mi (1957)

"Do Re Mi" is a 1957 album by singer-songwriter Bobby Troup, recorded for Liberty Records in Hollywood in early November 1956. Its defining trait is that every song was written by Troup himself — an unusual choice for vocal jazz of the era, when singers typically drew on the standards repertoire. The tracklist includes his own rendition of "Route 66" (the song became a hit primarily through the Nat King Cole Trio's version), along with "Daddy" and "Baby, Baby All The Time."
The sessions featured a notable lineup of West Coast jazz musicians: pianist Jimmy Rowles, multi-instrumentalist Buddy Collette (alto and tenor sax, clarinet, flute), trombonist/saxophonist Bob Enevoldsen, guitarist Al Viola, bassist Mike Rubin, and drummer Don Heath. The record was produced by Julie London — at the time a close companion of Troup's, whom he later married in 1959; she herself became a celebrated vocalist largely with his encouragement. Liner notes were written by jazz critic George T. Simon, with photography by Gene Lester.
Stylistically, the album sits within intimate, lounge-inflected West Coast vocal jazz, marked by the easygoing delivery that critics often likened to Nat King Cole's style. Decades later the record found a second life: in 2014–2017 it received its first CD release, paired with Troup's later album "Here's To My Lady" (1958), a tribute to Julie London.
