Bolero, Amor e Romance is a studio album by Brazilian maestro, singer, and producer Nilo Sérgio, released in 1963. Released on his flagship Musidisc label (as part of the premium Hi-Fi Deluxe series), the album continued the line of his highly successful romantic releases of the early 1960s.
This album developed the ideas established on the albums Dança e Romance (1962) and Romance (1962), but this time the central musical theme was the bolero, the most sensual of Latin American dances.
In the early 1960s in Brazil, despite the raging bossa nova boom, the classic Cuban and Mexican bolero still held a strong position on the radio and in the nightclubs of Rio de Janeiro. Nilo Sergio, with his phenomenal commercial flair, combined the strict rhythms of the bolero with the signature, crystal-clear "high-tech" sound of Musidisc.
The album "Bolero, Amor e Romance" listens like a single, continuous serenade. The orchestra, under Sergio's direction, reinterprets iconic Latin American standards, infusing them with European chic and Hollywood panache. The release is distinguished by its soft, velvety vocals (both Nilo Sergio himself and the label's guest session vocalists, who sing without strain, in a soft, ingratiating whisper) and impeccable percussion, which gently counts off the bars without overloading the overall airy arrangement. For collectors of vintage Latin American pop, this release is considered the benchmark for the so-called "orchestral bolero" of the golden era of vinyl.
