Nary a composer has expended as much effort on color as Alexander Scriabin. A synaesthete, eccentric and controversial pianist, Scriabin flat-out revolutionized the concept of tonality before his life was cut short by sepsis in 1915. But immortals never truly die, as American pianist Roger McVey proves on his soulful Scriabin tribute VERS LA FLAMME. The album shares its title with Scriabin’s op. 72, which, despite the meaning – “To the flame”, conjures a warm, eternal glow rather than burning embers. However, McVey is quick in furnishing those in the form of Scriabin’s infamously difficult etudes. Lyricism and vigor mingle effortlessly here – just as the composer intended. If only he could have heard this rendition!
