This duo’s sunny psych pop belies darker themes about relationships.

Ray Sonder and Saxon Gable take a long, hard look at love on Baby Smith’s debut album. An Australian couple based in Berlin, the spouses contrast soft, sunny psych pop with darker and more grounded lyrics about the ever-changing nature of even the closest relationships.

Gable spins the bleak sentiment “I give up on you” into a peppy refrain on opener “Adored”, before asking “You still love me, right?” over and over on the insecurity-inspired “Walkie Talkie”. The duo’s vintage warmth and cinematic flair brings to mind both Air and Stereolab, while “Don’t Look Down” evokes gentle exotica via hand percussion and soft guitar strumming.

Conceived in the pair’s Berlin flat, these songs feel very much of a piece with each other. And despite lyrics about losing one’s sense of personal meaning (“All I Do”) and dispiriting beauty standards (the title track), the record unspools with an airy lightness that suggests discussing these things makes them considerably more manageable.
