"Funanight" is a studio album by renowned Cape Verdean musician, singer, composer, and writer Mário Lúcio, released in 2019. Mário Lúcio is also widely known as the former Minister of Culture of Cape Verde and the leader of the iconic band Sementes.
The album's title is a play on the traditional Cape Verdean musical style funana (an accordion-based, high-tempo dance genre with strong African roots) and the English phrase "fun night."
"Funanight" is a tribute to and a contemporary reimagining of funana. Historically, this genre was a symbol of the struggle against colonialism and was long taboo. Mário Lúcio retains its celebratory, explosive rhythm and the characteristic sound of the diatonic accordion (gaita) and metal scraper (ferrinho), but infuses it with elements of contemporary pop, jazz, and Afrobeat.
The album was conceived as an international project, featuring guest artists from around the world (including Portuguese singer Lura). The lyrics are filled with themes of identity, the joy of life, dance, and the cultural unity of the Creole world.
