Trombonist and composer Des Cannings only recently discovered his own Indigenous Australian heritage. That discovery coincided with the 2023 Australian Indigenous Voice referendum, which Cannings experienced as a turning point in his own life. Seeking to process this revelation through his craft, he wrote nine original compositions for a large ensemble and assembled a ten-piece band of Sydney musicians to perform them — from rising talents like saxophonist Tessie Overmeyer and bassist Oscar Peterson to veteran woodwind masters Andrew Robertson and Jeremy Rose. The band recorded the material at the ABC Jazz studios, resulting in the 44-minute album 'Voices Heard And Unheard'. Its cover artwork was created by Ngarbal Gamilaraay artist Jeremy Worrall.
